Question 1

Why do I need to wear safety glasses when shooting a slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Always wear safety glasses when shooting a slingshot, regardless of your target. Bands and pouches can fail without warning, and projectiles or fork hits can ricochet unpredictably. Use ANSI Z87.1 rated safety glasses, available from SimpleShot, every single time you shoot. Even experienced shooters can get sloppy and pay for it. Safe shooting is non-negotiable.

Question 2

What is a fork hit and how do I avoid one?

Accepted Answer

A fork hit happens when your projectile strikes the slingshot frame instead of clearing the forks cleanly. Causes include inconsistent draw length, twisted bands, wrong band-to-ammo match, poor pouch release, or holding the frame at an incorrect angle. Avoid them by maintaining consistent draw length, ensuring bands are flat and untwisted, matching band thickness to ammo size, and practising a clean pouch release.

Question 3

Should I use a lanyard on my slingshot?

Accepted Answer

A lanyard is a wrist strap that prevents your slingshot from being launched out of your hand during a misfire or band failure. We recommend a lanyard for beginners and during any high-power setups. SimpleShot offers paracord lanyards compatible with most slingshot frames.

Question 4

What are the best backstop fabrics for slingshot shooting?

Accepted Answer

Effective backstop materials include heavy carpet, multiple layers of canvas, rubber mat offcuts, old denim, and ballistic-rated fabric. The goal is to absorb projectile energy without ricochet. Avoid hard surfaces like plywood or sheet metal that cause dangerous bounce-backs. Layered fabrics positioned at a slight angle work best for catching steel and lead ammo safely.

Question 5

What is the best way to store my slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Store your slingshot in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. UV light degrades latex bands quickly, so either remove the bands for long-term storage or keep the slingshot in a drawer, pouch, or case. For frequent shooters, a wall hook out of direct light works well. Keep bands cool to extend their lifespan.

Question 6

How do I choose my first slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Do not overthink it. If you are unsure about spending money on your first slingshot, you can always make your own from a tree fork. If you would rather buy one, we recommend the Scout slingshot. The Scout has helped thousands of new shooters get started and provides a stable, adaptable shooting platform for both beginners and seasoned veterans. Read the reviews; thousands of happy shooters can vouch for it.

Question 7

Should I get a target or a hunting slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Target slingshots prioritise accuracy, comfort, and consistency at moderate power levels. Hunting slingshots need to deliver enough energy to ethically harvest game, so they typically use heavier bands and larger ammo. If you are starting out, focus on target shooting first. Develop your accuracy before transitioning to hunting setups.

Question 8

What is a pickle fork slingshot and how is it different?

Accepted Answer

A pickle fork slingshot (PFS) has a much narrower fork gap than traditional slingshots. The narrow forks make the slingshot more compact and concealable, but they require a refined pouch release to avoid fork hits. PFS shooting demands more practice but offers unique advantages in portability and shooting style.

Question 9

Should I get a larger Scout XT slingshot if I have bigger hands?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Scout XT is a larger version of the standard Scout designed for shooters with bigger hands. The frame proportions, grip thickness, and overall size are scaled up for comfort and control. If your hand feels cramped on a standard Scout, the XT is the better fit.

Question 10

Are SimpleShot slingshots better than wire frame slingshots?

Accepted Answer

SimpleShot slingshots are made from precision-cut materials with consistent geometry, safer band attachment systems, and superior ergonomics. Wire frame slingshots (commonly called wrist rockets) are inexpensive but suffer from poor accuracy, band-cutting edges, and inconsistent draw mechanics. For serious shooting, a purpose-built frame like a SimpleShot is the better investment.

Question 11

What is your best slingshot?

Accepted Answer

There is no single 'best' slingshot. What is best depends on your hand size, shooting style, and intended use. The Scout LT is our most recommended all-rounder. The Hammer suits hammer-grip shooters. The Axiom Ocularis suits smaller hands or thumb-supported grips. The right slingshot is the one that fits your hand consistently.

Question 12

Which slingshot should I buy?

Accepted Answer

Consider three things: how you hold the slingshot, your hand size, and your purpose. For thumb-supported grip, try the Scout XT, Scout LT, or Axiom Ocularis. For full pinch grip, look at the BeanFlip or Scout LT. For hammer grip, the Hammer is purpose-built. Bigger hands suit the Hammer or Scout XT; smaller hands suit the Axiom Champ, Sparrow, or Ocularis.

Question 13

Why shoot a pickle fork slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Pickle fork slingshots offer extreme compactness, faster pouch-to-target speed due to less frame mass, and a unique shooting challenge. Many shooters enjoy the technical demand of mastering the narrow fork release. They also pack easily into a pocket, making them ideal for travel and field use.

Question 14

What are the best hunting bands, frames, and ammo for slingshots?

Accepted Answer

For small game hunting, use heavier band sets (around 0.76mm to 0.86mm latex) with steel or lead ammo in the 9.5mm to 12mm range. A sturdy hunting frame like the Hammer or Scout XT with strong band attachment is essential. Always test your setup on targets first to confirm it delivers enough energy for an ethical, humane harvest.

Question 15

Can I hunt with my slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Slingshots have been responsible for putting many a meal on the table, and the challenge of hunting with one is addictive. Hunting with a slingshot requires considerable skill and respect for your prey. You must place your projectile in the kill zone with a band-and-ammo combination that generates enough velocity and energy to ethically harvest the animal. Know your local laws before hunting; slingshot hunting is not legal everywhere.

Question 16

Can I hunt deer with a slingshot or slingbow?

Accepted Answer

Hunting deer with a standard slingshot is not recommended and is illegal in most jurisdictions. A slingbow (a slingshot adapted to shoot arrows) significantly increases energy delivery and may be legal for deer in some areas. Always confirm local hunting regulations before attempting any large game with slingshot equipment.

Question 17

What are the best slingshot bandsets for squirrel and rabbit hunting?

Accepted Answer

For squirrel and rabbit hunting, use medium-heavy bandsets in the 0.65mm to 0.76mm latex range with 9.5mm to 11mm steel or lead ammo. The combination should deliver enough velocity and energy for a clean, ethical kill at typical hunting distances. Test your accuracy and penetration on targets before hunting live game.

Question 18

What is the best hunting slingshot?

Accepted Answer

The best hunting slingshot is one that fits your hand, supports heavier band setups, and delivers consistent accuracy under field conditions. The Hammer is purpose-built for hunting and pairs well with heavy bands. The Scout XT and Axiom Pro are also strong hunting choices. Pick what feels stable in your grip at full draw.

Question 19

What alternate pouch materials can I use for a slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Pouch materials include kangaroo leather (premium, very durable), cowhide leather, microfiber synthetic, and recycled inner tube rubber. Kangaroo leather is the gold standard for serious shooters because it offers the best combination of grip, durability, and pouch release feel. Match pouch size to your ammo for best results.

Question 20

Are slingshot tubes quieter than flatbands?

Accepted Answer

Yes, tubular bands are generally quieter than flatbands. Tubes have less surface area moving through the air, which reduces the snapping sound on release. Flatbands are faster and more efficient but louder. For stealth shooting or hunting, tubes can be the better choice.

Question 21

Are thicker slingshot bands faster?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Thicker bands have more elastic potential but also more mass to accelerate. Beyond a certain thickness, the added band weight slows the projectile. The fastest setup depends on ammo weight: heavier ammo benefits from thicker bands, lighter ammo performs better with thinner bands. Match band thickness to ammo for optimum velocity.

Question 22

Are tubes or flatbands more powerful?

Accepted Answer

Flatbands typically deliver more power and velocity per unit of latex than tubes, due to better elastic efficiency. Tubes are quieter, more durable in rough environments, and easier to attach using wrap-and-tuck or threading methods. For maximum power, flatbands win. For durability and quiet shooting, tubes have the edge.

Question 23

How do bands perform in cold weather?

Accepted Answer

Latex bands lose elasticity and snap more easily in cold weather. Keep your slingshot warm by storing it inside your jacket or pocket between shots. Stretch the bands a few times before shooting to warm them up. Avoid holding at full draw for long periods in cold conditions, as this risks band failure.

Question 24

How do band thickness, taper, and velocity relate?

Accepted Answer

Thicker bands store more energy but accelerate slower due to added mass. Tapered bands (narrower at the pouch end) deliver more velocity than straight-cut bands because less mass is being moved at the end of the elastic stretch. The optimal taper depends on ammo weight, draw length, and band material. Standard tapers like 20mm-15mm work well for most setups.

Question 25

How do I measure and tune my slingshot bands for maximum speed?

Accepted Answer

Measure active band length (the stretched portion between pouch and frame attachment) and your draw length. The ideal active band length is typically 18% to 20% of your draw length for fastest velocity. Cut bands to this ratio, attach, and chronograph your shots. Adjust length up or down in 5mm increments until you find the sweet spot for your ammo.

Question 26

How do I know when my bands are worn out?

Accepted Answer

Signs of band wear include visible nicks or holes, loss of elasticity, a 'shiny' surface from oxidation, and noticeably reduced velocity. Bands degrade with UV exposure, ozone, and repeated stretching. Inspect bands before every session. If you see any cracking or thinning, replace immediately. A failed band at full draw is dangerous.

Question 27

What is the best way to store latex bands?

Accepted Answer

Store latex bands in a cool, dark, airtight container away from direct sunlight, heat, and ozone sources (like electric motors). A zip-lock bag in a drawer works well. Some shooters add a small piece of talcum powder to prevent the bands sticking together. Properly stored bands last 6 to 12 months unused.

Question 28

Can I shoot looped tube bandsets on my Ocularis slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Ocularis attachment system is designed to accept both flatband and tubular setups, including looped tubes. The Ocularis grommets hold tube bandsets securely without requiring additional ties. Match tube diameter and length to your ammo weight for best results.

Question 29

Can I shoot smaller ammo with the stock 11.25mm bands?

Accepted Answer

You can, but it is not optimal. Lighter ammo on heavier bands risks hand slap (the bands snapping back against your hand) and reduced accuracy. For ammo smaller than 9.5mm, switch to a lighter bandset designed for that ammo weight to maintain a clean, safe shooting experience.

Question 30

Can you provide a template for slingshot bandsets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, SimpleShot publishes band-cutting templates for all standard ammo sizes. Templates typically include active length, taper dimensions, and pouch attachment width. Visit simpleshot.com or simpleshot.academy for downloadable templates and band-cutting tutorials.

Question 31

Do you offer custom slingshot bands and bandsets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, custom bandsets are available on request. We can match band thickness, taper, length, and pouch type to your specific setup and ammo. Contact us with your draw length, ammo size, and intended use, and we will recommend or build the optimal bandset for you.

Question 32

What causes holes in slingshot bands?

Accepted Answer

Holes in bands are usually caused by fork hits, sharp edges on the slingshot frame, dragging on rough surfaces, or pinching at the attachment point. Inspect your frame for any rough or sharp edges and smooth them with sandpaper. Use proper band attachment methods to avoid stress concentrations that lead to tearing.

Question 33

How accurate do slingshot band lengths have to be?

Accepted Answer

Band length accuracy matters more than you might think. A 2mm difference between left and right bands can cause noticeable pouch tilt and accuracy loss. Cut bands to within 1mm of each other for consistent performance. A self-healing cutting mat and a rotary cutter with a steel ruler give the most accurate results.

Question 34

How long will slingshot bands last?

Accepted Answer

With moderate shooting (a few hundred shots per week), quality latex bands typically last 2 to 6 weeks of active use. Lifespan depends on band thickness, ammo weight, draw length, storage, and environmental conditions. Cold weather, UV exposure, and rough handling shorten band life. Always carry spare bands for serious shooting sessions.

Question 35

How should I store my slingshot bandsets?

Accepted Answer

Store unused bandsets in a cool, dark, airtight container, ideally in a refrigerator for long-term storage. Avoid heat, sunlight, and ozone. Bandsets stored properly can last 6 to 12 months before installation. Attached bands degrade faster due to ambient exposure and tension cycling.

Question 36

How do I match slingshot bands to ammo?

Accepted Answer

Match band power to ammo mass. As a starting guide: 6mm to 8mm ammo pairs with 0.45mm to 0.55mm bands, 9.5mm ammo with 0.55mm to 0.65mm bands, 11mm with 0.65mm to 0.76mm bands, and 12mm+ with 0.76mm to 0.86mm bands. Heavier ammo needs more elastic energy. Lighter ammo on heavy bands wastes energy and risks hand slap.

Question 37

Is wrap-and-tuck still the preferred slingshot band attachment method?

Accepted Answer

Wrap-and-tuck remains one of the most reliable attachment methods, especially for OTT (over-the-top) flatband setups. It is fast, requires no tools, and provides a secure hold that releases cleanly. Other methods like the Ocularis grommet system and chinese loop are also excellent, particularly for tubes.

Question 38

Should I use Linatex or latex for slingshots?

Accepted Answer

Latex is the standard choice for slingshot bands. It offers superior elasticity, velocity, and consistency. Linatex is a heavier-duty industrial rubber sometimes used for very low-power band sets or specialty applications, but it is significantly slower and less efficient than latex for typical slingshot use.

Question 39

Can I reuse slingshot pouches?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Quality pouches like kangaroo leather can be reused across multiple band changes. When replacing bands, carefully cut the old bands away from the pouch tabs and inspect the pouch for wear. If the pouch shows fraying, cracking, or thinning at the band attachment points, replace it.

Question 40

What are Rock Chucker bandsets?

Accepted Answer

Rock Chucker bandsets are heavy-duty tubular sets designed for shooting larger, irregular projectiles like stones or oversized ammo. They prioritise durability over velocity and tolerate the rough pouch wear that comes with shooting rocks. Not recommended for precision shooting.

Question 41

What are the most powerful bands you sell?

Accepted Answer

Our most powerful bandsets use 0.86mm to 1.0mm thickness latex in wider tapers, designed for hunting setups with heavy ammo (12mm to 16mm steel or lead). These deliver maximum energy delivery at the cost of higher draw weight and faster band wear. Use only with appropriately matched ammo and on frames rated for high-power setups.

Question 42

What bands are best for shooting marbles or lead ammo?

Accepted Answer

Marbles and lead ammo are heavier than equivalent-sized steel, so they need slightly more powerful bands to achieve good velocity. For 14mm to 16mm marbles, use 0.65mm to 0.76mm bands. For lead ammo, increase one step up from your equivalent steel band size. Test and chronograph for best results.

Question 43

What bandset is best for butterfly-style shooting?

Accepted Answer

Butterfly style requires longer active band lengths to handle the extended draw without exceeding 500% elongation. Use thinner bands (0.50mm to 0.65mm) cut longer than standard. SimpleShot offers dedicated butterfly bandsets, or you can cut custom lengths based on your full butterfly draw measurement.

Question 44

What is hand slap on a slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Hand slap occurs when the bands snap back and strike your slingshot hand after the projectile releases. It is caused by ammo too light for the bands, or bands too powerful for the ammo. Fix it by matching band power to ammo mass, or by adopting a slingshot grip that keeps your fingers below the band path.

Question 45

What is the stock bandset pouch size and can I shoot 9.52mm steel?

Accepted Answer

Stock pouches are sized for the bandset they ship with. Most standard SimpleShot pouches accommodate 9.5mm to 11mm ammo comfortably. For 9.52mm steel specifically, yes, this size works well in stock pouches across the standard Scout, Axiom, and Hammer band sets.

Question 46

What materials can slingshot bands be made of?

Accepted Answer

Slingshot bands are made from natural latex (most common and best performing), synthetic rubber blends, surgical tubing (latex or silicone), TheraBand (a branded latex variant), and occasionally Linatex for low-power applications. Natural latex offers the best balance of velocity, consistency, and lifespan for most shooters.

Question 47

What should I do with used slingshot bands?

Accepted Answer

Used latex bands are biodegradable but should be disposed of responsibly. Cut them into small pieces and place in general waste. Do not burn latex; it produces toxic fumes. Some shooters repurpose worn bands into pouch ties, slingshot wrist support, or DIY projects.

Question 48

What is the best taper for slingshot bands?

Accepted Answer

Standard tapers like 25mm-20mm or 20mm-15mm work well for most setups. Aggressive tapers like 25mm-15mm give higher velocity but reduce band life. Straight-cut bands last longest but offer less velocity. The best taper depends on your ammo weight, draw length, and whether you prioritise speed or longevity.

Question 49

When should I retire my slingshot bands?

Accepted Answer

Retire bands at the first sign of nicks, cracks, thinning, or loss of snap-back speed. Do not wait for visible failure. A band that breaks at full draw can cause injury and damage your frame. Most shooters retire bands after 500 to 2,000 shots depending on ammo weight and band thickness.

Question 50

Where do I find replacement bands for my SimpleShot slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Replacement bandsets for SimpleShot slingshots are available at GX Slingshots in South Africa and direct from SimpleShot internationally. We stock bands for all popular SimpleShot frames including the Scout, Axiom, Ocularis, and Hammer ranges. Browse our bands category or contact us for the right match.

Question 51

Which bands are best for shooting rocks?

Accepted Answer

For shooting rocks, use durable tubular bands like the Rock Chucker series. Rocks are irregular and abrasive, so flatband pouches wear out fast. Tubular bands with reinforced pouches handle the abuse better. Note that we generally do not recommend shooting rocks due to safety and ricochet risks.

Question 52

Which bandsets ship with your slingshots?

Accepted Answer

Most GX Slingshots ship with a standard mid-power bandset matched to the frame size and typical use case. Specifics vary by model, but the included band is suitable for 9.5mm steel ammo in most cases. Check the product page for exact details on the bandset included with each slingshot.

Question 53

Which slingshot bandsets last the longest and how can I extend their life?

Accepted Answer

Pre-tied flatbands with conservative tapers last longest. To extend bandset life: store in cool dark conditions, avoid full draw in cold weather, match band power to ammo correctly, inspect for wear before every session, and avoid fork hits. Tubular sets generally outlast flatbands in rough field conditions.

Question 54

Why are your bands named after ammo sizes?

Accepted Answer

We name our bandsets after the ammo size they are optimised for. This makes selection straightforward: if you shoot 9.5mm steel, you want the 9.5mm bandset. The naming convention eliminates guesswork around band thickness, taper, and pouch size matching.

Question 55

Can I shoot larger ammo with wider, thicker, or double bands?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for heavier ammo, you scale up: wider bands (more elastic mass), thicker bands (more stored energy), or double-band setups (two layers per side). Double bands deliver significantly more power but also more hand strain at full draw. Match power to ammo weight to avoid hand slap and to maximise velocity.

Question 56

Will water harm my slingshot bands?

Accepted Answer

Brief water exposure will not harm latex bands, but prolonged soaking can degrade the rubber. After getting bands wet, dry them with a clean cloth and let them air-dry away from heat. Wet bands also lose grip in the pouch attachment, so re-check security before shooting.

Question 57

Can I shoot BBs (.177 caliber) from my slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Yes, shooting BBs is an excellent and inexpensive way to hone your technique. BBs can be shot from any slingshot with the appropriate bands. The key is not to overpower the projectile. Ultra-lightweight bands and a pouch made for BBs are required. SimpleShot offers dedicated BB bandsets, including TheraBand Blue flatbands and black surgical tubing for tubular BB sets.

Question 58

Is clay slingshot ammo powerful enough? Can I hunt with it?

Accepted Answer

Clay ammo is significantly lighter than steel or lead of the same size, so it carries less energy and has limited hunting use. Clay is great for backyard plinking, target practice, and environmentally low-impact shooting. For hunting, stick to steel or lead ammo that delivers sufficient energy for ethical harvesting.

Question 59

Is it OK to dry-fire bands or shoot ultra-light ammo?

Accepted Answer

Dry-firing (releasing bands with no ammo) is dangerous and can damage bands, the frame, or your hand. Shooting ultra-light ammo on heavy bands is essentially the same as dry-firing because the bands accelerate too fast and snap back. Always use ammo properly matched to your band thickness.

Question 60

Is larger slingshot ammo better?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Larger ammo carries more energy on impact but is slower, harder to aim, and requires more powerful bands. Smaller ammo is faster, more accurate at distance, and easier on bands. For target shooting, 8mm to 9.5mm steel is the sweet spot. For hunting, 10mm to 12mm steel or lead delivers better terminal performance.

Question 61

Lead ammo vs steel ammo, which is better?

Accepted Answer

Lead ammo is denser than steel, so it carries more energy at the same diameter. This makes lead better for hunting. Steel ammo is harder, cheaper, more readily available, and easier to recover after shooting. For target practice and plinking, steel wins on cost and convenience. For hunting, lead delivers more impact energy.

Question 62

Can I shoot acorns from a slingshot?

Accepted Answer

You can, but acorns are inconsistent in size, weight, and shape, which makes them inaccurate. They are biodegradable and useful for backyard fun. Do not use them for serious target practice, hunting, or any situation requiring accuracy or consistent energy delivery.

Question 63

How do I shoot BBs effectively from a slingshot?

Accepted Answer

Use dedicated lightweight bandsets (like TheraBand Blue or black surgical tubing) and a BB-specific pouch. Standard pouches are too large and the BB will roll or eject unpredictably. SimpleShot offers complete BB shooting kits with the right bands, pouch, and ammo holder integration. BB shooting is excellent for practising technique cheaply.

Question 64

What are slingshot darts?

Accepted Answer

Slingshot darts are arrow-like projectiles designed to be launched from a slingshot. They typically have a heavy steel head and a stabilising tail. Darts are used for hunting and short-range tactical applications. They require a specific dart-shooting setup and pouch attachment.
